Orange barrels, a crushed row boat and some muddy tire tracks leading into Big Cedar Lake mark what’s left of a scary accident late Friday night on Highway 144.

Washington County Sheriff’s Sergeant Keith Uhan said a vehicle that was eastbound on County Highway K zipped through the intersection and went off the road and landed about 50-feet off the shore of Big Cedar Lake. Uhan said the water was about 2-feet deep.

Rescue crews got to the scene of the accident on the west side of the lake around 11:55 p.m.  The driver suffered minor injuries. He was identified as a 41-year-old West Bend man.

Uhan said alcohol was not a factor in the accident. The driver will be cited, possibly for inattentive driving.

  1. I know this intersection well, and to be honest, I’m surprised that this sort of thing doesn’t happen more frequently. That long downhill slope goes straight toward the lake, and it leaves a driver virtually NO room for error in the event of an emergency. I think the “barrier” that’s in place is woefully inadequate. I think something needs to be done in order to make this intersection safer; to prevent something like this from happening again.
