July 17, 2022 – Early this morning, July 17, at 12:16 a.m., Saukville Fire Department was requested to respond to a side-by-side residence in the 600 block of N. Dries St. for the heavy smell of natural gas. This was called in by the neighbor in the adjoining unit when she returned home from work.
Upon our arrival, our meters received high levels of carbon monoxide just by placing the meter inside the door of the residence. This prompted us to mask up with our SCBA units so we were able to breathe clean air upon entrance.
Once the first crew made entry it was quickly found that a fire had taken place in the kitchen earlier in the night as there was black soot on the floors and ceiling, and our meters were alarming with very high levels of carbon monoxide. We were told no one was at home but a primary search was still performed to ensure no one was inside.
There were two dogs in the residence; the neighbor was able to get one dog out right away prior to our arrival. Unfortunately, the homeowner’s beloved lab was further in the home and did not make it.
Crews performed overhaul operations to ensure there was no more fire and ventilated both units. We were on the scene in Saukville for about 3 hours before clearing.
