Jackson is surrounded by forests, marshlands, and farmland, all of which provide suitable habitat for coyotes. Seeing a coyote is not unusual and, by itself, is generally not a cause for concern.
However, if you encounter a coyote that is behaving unusually, appears sick, or shows little fear of people, you should take steps to scare it away. Effective hazing techniques include:
• Yelling and making loud noises
• Shaking or throwing cans filled with coins
• Throwing sticks or other objects toward (not at) the animal
• Spraying the coyote with water
• Using an air horn or ultrasonic animal deterrent
These actions help reinforce a coyote’s natural fear of humans and discourage it from remaining in residential areas.
Residents should also help reduce attractants by securing garbage, feeding pets indoors when possible, and avoiding leaving pet food or other food sources outside.
