Fatal accident on Hwy 144 in Washington Co. | By Sgt. Chad Beres

June 29, 2021 – Town of Barton, WI – Washington County suffered its third fatal accident Tuesday morning, June 29, 2021.

At approximately 8:04am the Washington County Sheriff’s Office was notified of rollover crash at the intersection of Highway 144 and Wallace Lake Road in the Township of Barton.

 

A caller advised a box truck had struck a car and the driver of the car was breathing, but not conscious. The caller further advised there was a child in a safety seat in the back seat of the car.

 

Squads were dispatched to the scene along with West Bend Fire & Rescue. An off-duty Sheriff’s Deputy came upon the accident scene and determined the driver of the car was agonal breathing and it did not appear she had been wearing a seatbelt.

When the first on-duty Deputy arrived, he assisted Rescue with removing the driver of the car from the vehicle and she was transported to Froedtert in Wauwatosa. The child had been in a safety seat behind the driver and the child was transported to Froedtert West Bend.

The driver of the box truck was uninjured and was cooperative during the investigation. The Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction Team was called in to assist with the investigation.

The initial investigation showed the car was stopped at the stop sign on Wallace Lake Road and pulled out in front of the box truck which was traveling north on Highway 144. The box truck struck the car on the driver’s side of the vehicle. The Sheriff’s Office was later notified the driver of the car passed away due to the injuries sustained in the crash.

Highway 144 was closed to traffic for approximately 2.5 hours to facilitate the investigation and removal of the involved vehicles.

The driver of the car was a 35-year old West Bend woman and her name is not being released. There is no further information being released at this time as this is an active investigation
