Fireplace investigated as cause in Town of Erin house fire | By Chief Tony Burgard

October 16, 2025 – Hartford, WI – More details are being released from Hartford Fire Department regarding the possible cause of the house fire this week on County Highway K in the Town of Erin.
At approximately 2:55 p.m.. on 10/14/2025, Hartford Fire & Rescue responded to the report of a house on fire near the intersection of County Highway K and Pleasant Hill Road in the Town of Erin.
The 911 caller reported that someone was possibly still in the house. Before arriving on scene, dispatch updated the exact location and address. The first arriving fire command vehicle found a very long driveway leading to a large house on fire that was well involved.
A neighbor reported one person was out of the house, but reported her husband may still be inside.
A hose line was deployed to start knocking down the flames, and an aggressive search of remaining survivable spaces in the house could be checked.
The next arriving engine finished deploying large supply hose, as the driveway was over 1000’ long and needed more than what one engine carries.
Extinguishment efforts continued and were changed to a defensive strategy as the fire continued to grow, and interior search crews exited from the building after not finding any occupants inside those portions of the house.
Mutual aid crews assisted with additional exterior hose lines to bring the fire under control, and also provided tenders carrying thousands of gallons of water to the scene.
EMS crews provided rehabilitation efforts to the firefighters as well as staffing an ambulance on scene. The initial ambulance crew provided assessment and care for the homeowner who had evacuated the house, and care was transferred to a mutual aid ambulance upon their arrival.
No fire or EMS personnel were injured during this incident. The occupant was not injured and refused transport to the hospital.
It was determined that the male occupant was not home at the time of the fire, and that no one else was in the house at the time of the fire.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation at the time of this release, but efforts continue to determine what occurred while a fire was being lit in a wood-burning fire place at the time of the fire.
Assistance was provided by Washington County Sheriff’s Office with dispatch services and deputies. Mutual Aid assistance was provided by St Lawrence Fire Company, Slinger Fire Department, Neosho Fire Department, Allenton Fire Department, Iron Ridge Fire Department, Richfield Fire Department, Kohlsville Fire Department, Germantown Fire Department, West Bend Fire Department, Theresa Fire Department, Juneau Ambulance, and Lifestar Ambulance.
