Wauwatosa West vs. Germantown WIAA Level 2 D2 football playoff preview | By Jason Howarth

October 29, 2021 – Germantown, WI – No. 2 Germantown vs. No. 3 Wauwatosa West with a North Shore Conference powerhouse awaiting the winner.

Germantown

  • No. 2 Germantown will host No. 3 Wauwatosa West in the second round of the WIAA football playoffs, on Friday, October 29, 2021 with a 7 p.m. kickoff. 

  • Germantown defeated No. 7 Milwaukee Reagan 54-16 in the first round, while Wauwatosa West defeated No. 6 Brookfield East 48-28 in the first round 

  • The winner of this game will play the winner of the game between No. 1 Homestead and No. 4 Nicolet in the Sectional Semifinals set for Friday, November 5, 2021 at 7 p.m. 

  • Germantown has won the last three meetings between the two schools, all in the regular season, with the most recent being a 3-0 win in week 2 of 2019.

Warhawks Have Great and Balanced Offensive, Wauwatosa West’s Offense is Otherworldly 

  • The Trojans have the eighth highest scoring offense in the entire state this season, scoring 452 total points, averaging 45.2 points per game. 

  • Trojans are entirely a run-based team, having just 156 passing yards on 4 completions (out of 13 total passing attempts) for the whole season, but are the best running offense in the state, with a state best 4,056 total rushing yards and also a state best 56 rushing touchdowns including three players with double digit rushing touchdowns; Wauwatosa West is not afraid to gamble after scoring, having a state best 47 2-point conversions made this season 

  • The Warhawks have far more modest, but still potent offense in comparison, one equally comfortable in both running and passing the ball, with 1,350 rushing yards and 14 rushing touchdowns and 1,401 passing yards and 16 passing touchdowns this season respectively 

  • Germantown had the fourth most points in the Greater Metro Conference this season, with 262 total points, averaging 26.2 points per game this season 

Is Germantown’s Defense Capable to Undergo Such a Tough Matchup and Win?  

  • Germantown does have a very solid defense, giving up just 86 total points in their conference games this season and 140 total points overall (includes playoffs) 

  • The Warhawks generate big plays in the forms of tackles for loss (61), sacks (22.5), and turnovers (4 fumbles recovered and 9 interceptions); all stats that were either the top of or at the top of the Greater Metro Conference 

  • Wauwatosa West meanwhile has surrendered 166 total points this season, but the Trojans are not known for generating big plays like sacks and turnovers 

Three Key Players to Watch 

  • Wauwatosa West senior running back Waquon Kelly: ranks 19th in the state for total rushing yards with 1,540 on 113 carries (171.1 total yards per game) and a team leading 17 rushing touchdowns 

  • Germantown senior defensive back Kyle Haas: Haas leads the team 5 interceptions, a strength completely neutralized given the Trojans offense; Haas will be challenged to find new ways off defensive production; has 19 total tackles this season 

  • Germantown junior quarterback Henry Kelley: has been solid all season going 60 for 98 passing the ball (61.2% completion) with 895 passing yards, 11 touchdowns and just 1 interception; Kelley also has 171 rushing yards on 63 running attempts and 2 rushing touchdowns; missed part of the season due to injury and will be counted on to response in quick fashion should the Trojans run up the score and run out the clock throughout the game
