Happy Catholic Schools Week | By Will Waech – Principal at St. Frances Cabrini

January 29, 2024 – I am William Waech, the principal at Saint Frances Cabrini School.  This is the start of Catholic Schools Week, which is a celebration of Catholic schools around the country.

Historically, Catholic Schools were started as a safe haven for Catholic families from public schools, which were believed to be too Protestant. At that time there was a great disdain for the Catholic immigrants coming into the country, and we were largely looked at as second-class citizens.

Today, not much has changed. Catholic Schools are now a safe harbor for Catholic families looking to avoid what is being taught in the public school, which is not always in accordance with our beliefs as Catholics. The idea that there is a God and that He loves and cares for us is met with great disdain by a world that has become very secular.

I feel very blessed that Saint Frances Cabrini is our patron saint. She was one of those Catholic immigrants at the time, who stood for everything that is true and beautiful of the faith. She did so with great tenacity and devotion, starting many hospitals, schools and orphanages.

Her example gives me courage and fortitude to carry on the mission of the Catholic Church and to provide a safe place for Catholic families to send their children to a school that does its very best to pass on the faith. This is a very large task.

As many of you know, the secular culture has a great pull on our souls with lots of temptations. I find myself not always handling these temptations well, but the Church has its traditions, such as the Sacrament of Reconciliation, to help us renew our relationship with God.

If you are looking for a safe place for your child to grow in the Catholic faith and to be challenged and supported academically, please reach out to us. I would be happy to help you discover if Saint Frances Cabrini School is the right fit for you and your family.

On a side note – Join St. Frances Cabrini on March 2 for the 2024 SFC Dinner Auction. (We’re doing electronic invitations this year to save on printing costs.)
