Hoops with Heroes tips off tonight at St. Frances Cabrini

April 28, 2017 – West Bend, WI – Who are your kids’ heroes? For a lot of kids, it’s the people who put their lives on the line to make the world a better place: firefighters, police officers, soldiers, and first responders.

We thought it would be great for our kids to spend some time with these men and women they look up to, to get to know them, ask them questions, find out about their lives and their jobs, and have some fun too. So we found a group of local heroes, and challenged them to a friendly game of basketball. We’re calling it Hoops With Heroes.

Hoops with Heroes

This evening the Middle School kids have an amazing opportunity.

They’ll be out on the court, taking on firefighters from the West Bend Fire Department, officers from several police departments including the Washington County Sherriff’s Office, the Mequon PD, Wauwatosa PD, and a few others, an officer from the Wisconsin DNR, an officer from the US Navy, and EMT’s from Flight for Life. Capt. Pat Pryor of the Mequon PD, a Cabrini dad, has volunteered to coach the Middle School players, and parent John Hemauer will act as referee.

Elementary School kids to get in on the fun too. Before the game, all the players will spend a half hour warming up.

Younger kids are invited to join in the warm-ups, so they can shoot the ball around with their heroes. And after the game there will be pizza and soda, so the players have a little more time to hang out together.

Organizers had seen other events where kids got to spend time with local heroes, and saw what a special an experience it was for the kids. They started asking people if they’d like to participate, and the response was overwhelmingly positive. The heroes are looking forward to the game as much as the kids are!

Everyone is invited to come watch the game. It should be a lot of fun.

Admission: $2/adult, $1/student, $5/family pass
