Increase in recycling fee in City of Hartford | By Steve Volkert

September 14, 2020 – Hartford, WI – Elected officials in the City of Hartford have approved a 35-cent monthly increase in the recycling fee; that increase will start in 2021.

The total monthly fee is $7 for recycling. The new total is $7.35 per month. Annually that’s an increase from $84 to $88.20.

An explaination is below from City Administrator Steve Volkert.

What does $.35 per month get you? At Tuesday’s Finance Committee Meeting and then again at the City Council meeting, the council approved a minimal $.35 or 5% increase in the monthly recycling charges starting in 2021.

This fee increase is representative of three major factors. First, the cost to pick up recyclables by our outside firm continues to go up 3% annually.

Second, the cost to pick up brush curbside every year has increased as more and more people take advantage of this service which very few other communities offer. The recent Emerald Ash Borer problem has created many dead trees in resident’s yards giving them more brush to get rid of.

Finally, an overwhelming number of people have reached out and requested more hours at the local recycling center. We have heard you and starting in April of 2021, will be adding a third night (Tuesday) from 5-7 PM.

So now, you will be able to drop off recycling, yard waste, brush and grass trimmings three days a week. We hope that you enjoy these added services and see how such a little increase in fees is getting you much more convenience in the new year.
