Living Word Lutheran Timberwolves Wrestlers take 5th at Oakfield Tournament | By Tim Muther

January 29, 2024 – Washington Co., WI – A total of 138 points was the final tally for the Timberwolves in the Oakfield Tournament.

Eight wrestlers stepped on the mat for the Timberwolves and all 8 contributed to the fifth-place team score. The tournament was won by Fond du lac with 224, and Living Word was sandwiched between Fort Atkinson (165.5) and Johnson Creek (127.5). Eli Diaz (113 pounds) and Nick Smedal (175 pounds) each took 2nd place for the Timberwolves. Bradyn Gregor was third in the 165-pound weight classes.

Taking fourth place for the Twolves were Dominick Wilder (126 pounds) and JJ Guarnero (157 pounds). Jakob Toerpe (132) and David Putnam (144) each garnered fifth-place awards. Owen Hua was 6th at 120 and Kayden Roberts was 7th for the Timberwolves at 285 pounds. The Twolves showed improvement from last year’s score of 73.5 points.

Significant victories included the following: Gregor, a junior, won 3 matches and now has a
team-leading 26 wins on the year. Diaz, a sophomore, won two matches and has 23 wins for the season. Sophomore Owen Hua recorded his first pin of the season. Smedal, a sophomore won the most matches on the day for the Twolves (4) including a 9-8 victory over a Sheboygan South opponent. In that match, Smedal trailed early and scored a reversal with one second left to win the match.

At 285 pounds, Roberts- a sophomore, won his final match of the day with a pin against Andres Javier of Oshkosh Lourdes. Senior JJ Guarnero made a successful debut at a new weight class this week (157) after starting the year at 175 pounds and then manning the 165-pound spot for a few weeks. Guarnaro is now 5-2 in his new weight class.

Coach Dummann noted the success of the team. “Each guy won at least one match one way or another. That’s very encouraging. That doesn’t always happen. We had several comeback wins and beat some good wrestlers from a lot of solid wrestling programs. We are learning from our mistakes and starting to build some momentum for the upcoming tournaments- both the conference and the regional tournament.”
