Man held on $2 million cash charged with attempted homicide & mayhem in Fond du Lac County

April 1, 2026 – Fond du Lac Co., Wi – Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric J. Toney announced that Luis Antonio Sevilla Benavidez made his initial court appearance on charges of Attempted First Degree Intentional Homicide, Mayhem, and Aggravated Battery. All three charges include Domestic Abuse and Dangerous Weapon enhancers.

Judge Tricia Walker set cash bond at $2 million and the defendant is anticipated to be court again on April 17 at 1:30 p.m. for preliminary hearing status conference.

The charges stem from a brutal stabbing that occurred on March 21, 2026 in the City of Fond du Lac.

The defendant is believed to be from Nicaragua and the Department of Homeland Security advised that the defendant has no legal status and is illegally in the United States. The defendant is presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty.

District Attorney Toney said, “The rapid response of the Fond du Lac Police Department and Officer Stelter may have saved the woman’s life by stopping a crime in progress. Illegal immigration continues to present serious challenges for law enforcement and communities across Wisconsin, with Fond du Lac County recently prosecuting other illegal migrants for Human Trafficking, Sexual Assault, and Attempted Homicide.”

This case is being investigated by the City of Fond du Lac Police Department and prosecuted by District Attorney Eric Toney.
