UPDATE | Peek inside Hartford’s real-life time capsule mystery

May 12, 2026 – Hartford, Wi – A quick visit to City Hall in Hartford, Wi, on Monday to check out the copper box time capsule pulled from the cornerstone of the building last week. It was Sally Jensen who initially stumbled upon an article about the buried treasure while collecting information for a history piece on City Hall.

The box, covered in dust from the stone-cutting process, weighed about 10 pounds. The box was filled with various pieces of paperwork – the full page on top from the Hartford Times was published June 16, 1927 and the bold print read, ‘World War Roster Washington County’ with a line below that read ‘Are there any missing?’ The rest of the newspaper was column after column of names in alphabetical order of those called to military service.

The image on the page resembled the Doughboy statue outside the old County Courthouse on Fifth Avenue and Poplar in West Bend, WI.

The listing of names occurred in other cities as well including West Bend, Wi where a sign titled: Honor Roll ‘Dedicated to the Men and Women of the City of West Bend who are Members of our Armed Forces. The pictures above and below were not part of the contents in the copper box.

Inside, the true treasure was history itself.

According to the original 1930 Hartford Times article, the contents include:

  • Photographs of Hartford Common Council members
  • Directories of city officials
  • 1930 newspaper editions
  • A telephone directory
  • Photos of Old City Hall
  • A 1930 census report
  • A written history of Hartford
  • Mayoral addresses and ceremony records
  • Organization membership lists tied to the building project

The contents of the box were flimsey with damaged corners. The staffer at City Hall indicated the box would be turned over to the Hartford Historical Society or the new Hartford Museum.

This is a working story, more information will be posted when details are available.

Below is the initial article on how the time capsule was discovered by researcher Sally Jensen of Hartford, Wi.

May 11, 2026 – Hartford, Wi – It started like a chapter torn from a dusty Hardy Boys mystery. A forgotten clue. A hidden compartment. Months of dead ends. And finally, buried inside the walls of Hartford City Hall, a copper box untouched since 1930. For Sally Jensen, the adventure began quietly in 2024 while volunteering in the History Room at the Hartford Public Library.
