May 30, 2021 – Myra, WI – For the past few months contractor Jerry Zelenka of Breezen Properties has been working to update the community on the historic home remodel in Myra.
Zelenka has let us tag along as he pulls back the curtain on the 1,800-square-foot home that carries a lot of stories such as when the building served as the old Post Office, general store, stagecoach stop, and home to a family of nine.
This week Zelenka stumbled upon something else… a hand full of buttons and an Indian Head penny from 1887.
“We are removing the two large front windows and replacing them with thermopane windows with 18-inch stain glass transom windows on top,” said Zelenka.
“The buttons seemed to be wood, leather and ivory. They had fallen between the window and the sill. The old buttons and a 1887 Indian Head penny were under the front windows.”
Zelenka’s penny is in extremely fine condition. A search for its value makes Zelenka’s discovery worth a pretty penny.

“Prices vary from $20 to $20,000 not sure who to believe,” said Zelenka. “I am sure it’s worth at lease a penny.”

The 1887 United States Indian Head one cent features Lady Liberty facing left, wearing a feathered Indian headdress with ‘LIBERTY’ written on the headband. ‘UNITED STATES OF AMERICA’ is written in capital letters along with the date at the base of the coin.Â
On the ‘tails’ side is an oak leaf with three arrows tied in a bow and a shield at the top above the words ONE CENT.
