February 27, 2023 – Nashville, TN – Belmont University men’s basketball student-athlete and 2018 Slinger H.S. graduate Derek Sabin has been named to the 2023 Missouri Valley Conference Men’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete Teams.
Sabin, a fifth-year senior, holds a 3.91 grade-point average in his chosen major of exercise science with a pre-med track and minors in chemistry and strength and conditioning.
The 6-9 forward, who has served as team co-captain this season, was named College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Feb. 21.

The criteria for the MVC Scholar-Athlete Team voting parallels the CSC (College Sports Communicators) standards for Academic All-America voting.
Student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale). He must have participated in at least 75 percent of his team’s games during the regular season.
No student-athlete is eligible until he/she has completed one full calendar year at his/her current institution and been on a college roster in that sport for two years. For transfers, graduate students, and two-year college graduates, the student-athlete must have completed one full calendar year at the nominating institution to be eligible, although graduate students who are competing at a different institution than the one from which they earned their undergraduate degree are eligible even if they are in their first semester at the graduate institution.
Nominees in graduate school must have a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or above both as an undergrad and in grad school.
Belmont University men’s basketball has earned postseason invitations 15 of the last 17 seasons, including nine berths to the NCAA Tournament. The Bruins have won 20 conference championships since 2006 – third-most nationally over that span.
Belmont has won 20 or more games in 13 consecutive seasons. Belmont is one of only five NCAA Division I programs outside the Power 5 to post Top 100 rankings 12 consecutive seasons. Belmont University men’s basketball boasts an NCAA-leading 19 CoSIDA Academic All-America selections since 2001 and is the only NCAA Division I program to make the NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) Honor Roll every year of existence.
