Slinger HS alum Derek Sabin receives Good Neighbor Award | By Greg Sage

 March 22, 2023 – Slinger, WI – Belmont University men’s basketball senior Derek Sabin has been honored as part of the 2023 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Good Neighbor Award release for the winter season.

Sabin is one of 12 MVC student-athletes recognized during the winter season.

In order to be eligible for the award, the student-athlete must be in good academic standing, must demonstrate good citizenship through good sportsmanship and significant community service, and must participate in a sport, during the season of recognition.

Sabin, a 6-9 forward from Slinger, Wisconsin, made 89 game appearances and 10 starts during his Bruin career.



A team captain for the 2022-23 season, Sabin was named to the Academic All-District® Men’s Basketball Team by College Sports Communicators.

The post player is a 4-time Belmont University Dean’s List honoree, 3-time OVC Commissioner’s Honor Roll recipient and 2-time NABC Honors Court selection.

Sabin earned the 2021 OVC Academic Medal of Honor emblematic of a 4.0 grade-point average for the calendar year.

He holds a 3,91 GPA in his major of exercise science with a pre-med track. He also holds a double minor in chemistry and strength and conditioning.


Off the court, Sabin took part in a Belmont University sports evangelism mission trip to Poland, served as a pre-med mentor to freshman and sophomore undergraduate pre-medicine students, volunteered as an associate member in Belmont’s chapter of Best Buddies, and was published in the Journal of Sports Biomechanics.

He was honored as part of the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Spotlight program earlier this season.

Sabin joins Belmont men’s soccer student-athlete JP Armbruster who was honored in the fall. 

Belmont University men’s basketball has earned postseason invitations 15 of the last 17 seasons, including nine berths to the NCAA Tournament. The Bruins have won 20 conference championships since 2006 – third-most nationally over that span (Gonzaga, Kansas). Belmont has won 20 or more games in 13 consecutive seasons (Gonzaga, Kansas, Oregon). Belmont University men’s basketball boasts an NCAA-leading 19 CoSIDA Academic All-America selections since 2001 and is the only NCAA Division I program to make the NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) Honor Roll every year of existence.
