Feb. 4, 2018 – Fond du Lac, WI – The 2018 sturgeon spearing season on the Winnebago System gets underway on Saturday, Feb. 10. “We plan to check water clarity on Monday,” said Ryan Koenigs,
Last year Blade Ramthun, 23, of Kewaskum managed to spear a 68-inch sturgeon on Sunday morning on Lake Winnebago in neighboring Fond du Lac County.
This is Ramthun’s third sturgeon in the last four years.
Ramthun started spearing sturgeon with his dad, grandpa Harvey, sister Booke and brother Chayce when he was 12 years old.
For the Ramthun family the annual event starts every October with building shacks, attending the Sturgeons for Tomorrow dinner, and then hauling the shacks and cutting the ice.
There were 12,962 licenses sold for 2017.
According to the DNR 198 sturgeon were speared on opening day and 15 were 100 pounds or larger.
