Slinger teacher Sue Henkel recognized with Rotary’s Paul Harris Award for Exceptional Service Above Self | By Billye Survis

July 24, 2023 – Slinger, WI – In a heartfelt ceremony held at the Slinger-Allenton Rotary Club on Wednesday, July 19, Sue Henkel was honored with the prestigious Paul Harris Award for her outstanding commitment to education, youth exchange, and community service.

The award, named after Rotary International’s founder, Paul Harris, is presented to individuals who have demonstrated exemplary dedication to the Rotary’s motto of “Service Above Self.” Sue’s tireless efforts and unwavering dedication to empowering her students and enriching the community have earned her this well-deserved recognition.

Sue Henkel, a beloved and esteemed member of the Slinger High School staff, joined the school staff in 2013. Over the past decade, she has become an influential figure for countless students who have passed through her classroom.

Sue has been known to teach her students more than just the subjects in the curriculum; she imparts valuable life skills, compassion, and resilience – elements that go beyond the conventional realm of education.

One of Sue’s key passions lies in ensuring that all students have the opportunity to succeed, especially those in Alternative Education or considered at risk. Her dedication to guiding and supporting these students has resulted in numerous success stories, as they have graduated and transformed into productive members of society under her mentorship.

Upon arriving at Slinger High School in 2013, Sue took the helm of all youth exchange activities, proving her strong commitment to promoting cultural understanding and fostering global connections among the students. Her efforts didn’t go unnoticed, as she was warmly welcomed into the Slinger-Allenton Rotary in 2018, where she currently holds the esteemed position of the District’s Youth Exchange Coordinator.

 

“Sue truly embodies the spirit of ‘Service Above Self,’ and her impact on the lives of young minds is immeasurable,” said Ken Resier, the President of Slinger-Allenton Rotary. “Her dedication to empowering students to embrace their potential is a shining example of the Rotary’s core values.”

 

Outside the classroom, Sue is equally active in community events, wholeheartedly volunteering her time and effort to ensure their success. Her enthusiasm and commitment to giving back to the community have made her an invaluable asset to various local initiatives and projects.

 

The Paul Harris Award is the Rotary’s highest honor and is only bestowed upon individuals whose dedication and selflessness inspire others to follow in their footsteps. Sue Henkel, with her unwavering commitment to education and community service, is truly a beacon of hope and inspiration for all.
