Top West Bend East diver signs Letter of Intent to UW-Madison | By Jason Howarth

November 19, 2021 – West Bend, WI – West Bend East High School senior Jan Lanser signed his Letter of Intent to attend the University of Wisconsin (Madison) and compete at the NCAA Division 1 level in the Big Ten Conference.
Lanser intent
As a member of the West Bend East and West Co-Op Boys Swim and Dive team, Lanser is the defending WIAA Division State Diving Champion and owns the school record in diving.
According to stats on ncsasports.org Lanser broke the school record of 6 and 11 meters (diving board heights) with scores of 346.6 and 587 respectively.
He also nearly broke the all-time D1 state dive meet record in his championship season, falling just 1.4 points short of the record
Earlier in the summer, Lanser was named a diving All-American by the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association (NISCA).
West Bend Diving Coach Peter DeTunq spoke of Lanser receiving the honor and the prestigious NISCA.
“NISCA is a professional organization that supports high school coaches of all aquatic sports. The organization is dedicated to coach education and athlete recognition through the All-America programs,” said DeTunq.  “NISCA allows opportunities for coaches to network and exchange knowledge and experience.”
Lanser
Lanser will take his pedigree and help bring the Badgers’ Men Swim and Dive to new heights, as the team has struggled to finish higher than fifth place in the Big Ten standings since the turn of the millennium.
The Badgers started the current season undefeated.  Many of the school’s records (all which date to 2013 or 2017 exclusively) should pose great new challenges for Lanser to tackle next season.
Lanser should also have a stable head coach at Madison as the current head coach Yuri Suguiyama is in his third season with the program, leading both the Men’s and Women’s teams to amazing success during the 2019-2020 season, which saw women’s swimmer Beata Nelson win three individual Big Ten Championships in the 200 IM, 100 Back and 200 Back, while the men’s team had its best Big Ten finish in nearly 20 years.
Lanser will join a Badgers’ roster comprised mostly of swimmers and drivers that will either be graduating in 2022 or will be juniors and seniors when he arrives on campus.
The roster makeup should provide Lanser with great opportunity to grow while being able to make meaningful contributions to program that has yet to scratch the surface of success.
