Training my sheep to show at the Washington County Fair | By McKinley Belk with St. Lawrence Eager Beavers

St. Lawrence, Wi – My name is McKinley Belk, I am 9 years old and I’m a member of the St. Lawrence Eager Beavers 4H Club. This is my first year showing market lambs at the Washington County Fair.

myI joined the market lamb project because my mom used to show sheep and I love sheep.

My lambs’ names are George and Gabe, they are both January lambs.  Since early May, every night I walk my lambs to give them exercise.  I also practice bracing them and setting up their feet, so they look their best and show off their muscles; it’s like they are making a muscle when you brace them.

This does not come naturally to them and takes some practice. I also practiced moving around in the best spot so the judge can see the lamb at every angle, for example, when the judge is in front, you hold the head of the lamb and stand off to the side of the lamb.

During my practice with lambs, I would have my parents pretend to be the judge in a pretend show.  Getting my sheep ready for the fair was a great experience and I really enjoyed it.  I hope to see you at the fair!
