December 28, 2020 – West Bend, WI – This week we will post popular videos from 2020. Be sure to cast your vote on which one you like. At the end of the week we will tally which video was the No. 1 story for 2020.
Demolition on the old Fleet Farm site in West Bend got underway in July 2020. On Monday, July 27 the buildings in the yard area were leveled by Robinson Brothers Environmental and Tuesday the canopy and gas hut were demolished.
The old Fleet Farm, 1637 W. Washington Street, in West Bend is being razed to make room for Kwik Trip. It will be the fifth Kwik Trip in West Bend. That development has been pushed off a year and is expected to start in 2021.
Glenn Bonham manned the excavator. Neighbors who watched the demolition compared the heavy machinery in action to watching a TRex movie. The building in the yard area took about three hours to dismantle. The gas station was down in a similar timespan.
Bonham said the gas tanks are expected to be removed on Wednesday. There is a chance once the concrete is pulled off the plastic holding tanks will pop up as the water table is pretty high and according to neighbor Rich LaBuda it was “very wet there when the tanks were installed.”
Quite a few people chimed in with memories about the old gas station. Receiving the 4-cents off a gallon of gas on the back of your shopping receipt or getting a small bag of salty popcorn when you filled up.
The demolition of the main building will start when We Energies is contacted to turn the power off. That’s expected to be sometime this week… but it seems the contractor’s schedule is unpredictable.
