July 24, 2023 – Washington County, WI – How did “The 57 Bus” and “The Kite Runner,” books used in our local middle and high schools, capture the interest of concerned West Bend School District parents and taxpayers? Perhaps it is the profanity, graphic violence (rape scenes, suicide scenes), and hate-filled interactions in these books? Is it the
fixation on gender identity, sexuality, and negative comments about Christian Catholics and Muslims?
Why does it matter that citizens challenge these books? It matters in school hallways and the workplace where profanity has no place. It matters that we do not confuse children about a file in their brain marked gender. Why introduce children to the concept of being gender fluid, the potential to be any gender at any time? Why expose children to the violence described in “The Kite Runner?” Should they be desensitized to the lack of law and order? Haven’t we had enough of that in some of our American cities?
What should be done about questionable books? Let parents and children read them together at home?
If not, support legislation at the state level that provides parents, taxpayers, and school boards opportunities to view controversial or inappropriate materials. Transparency, avenues for feedback, and ramping up informed consent can only help. Step back from the trendy ideology of transgenderism.
Science confirms gender across species is related to chromosomes. Teaching sexuality and gender issues is best done within a health education class where many parents believe these topics are usually discussed. Use ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act) dollars for counseling students dealing with gender dysphoria and other mental health challenges.
Finally, it never hurts to provide high-quality, content-rich, truth-and-fact-based education for all students. This is the backbone of a classical education that has served America well for generations.
