Letter to the Editor | Arrest of McLane Elementary employee heightens awareness about books provided to children in West Bend School District | By Nancy Fix

July 17, 2023 – West Bend, Wi – After recently reading about an employee of McLane Elementary being arrested on suspicion of possessing child pornography, it made me wonder what steps could be taken to prevent sexual addictions in our community.  Then I thought about the use of inappropriate books in our school district and wondered if we should be taking into consideration the effect that the content of the books (The 57 Bus and The Kite Runner) may have on the children being exposed to them.

Letter to the McLane

There can be a fine line when teaching sex to developing minds as to how and what trips the trigger for unnatural sexual addiction. Our number one concern should be the welfare of the children.

(See https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3050060/  regarding the brain’s reward centers concerning addictions, and https://www.dailysignal.com/2021/08/09/are-these-7-lgbt-kids-books-in-your-childs-classroom-or-school-library/  regarding early exposure to sexual content.)

What has happened to our education system that inappropriate books are being offered to minors? Let’s rectify the problem and protect our children and community by shelving books with adult themes and excerpts as “for adults only” in our schools, where they belong.  That’s how these two books are shelved at our local public library.
I pray that those deciding on the fate of these books for our school district will use common sense in their decisions.   Ultimately, the school board has the authority and duty to override recommendations of the review committees if they feel they were made in err.
