VIDEO | Final days for Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel Exhibition in Green Bay, WI

Green Bay, WI – Packed up grandma and took her on a road trip to see the Michelangelo Sistine Chapel Exhibit in Green Bay and it was very much worth the trip.

At 89 years old my mother is never going to travel to Vatican City in Rome to see the Sistine Chapel. While the former Dancing Granny is a dedicated walker and fit for adventure, she feels more comfortable closer to home.

Managed to convince her the 2-hour drive to Green Bay was closer than a flight to Rome and it was out the door we went.

The paintings by Michaelangelo, which date to 1508, are normally seen on the 68-foot vaulted ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.

Brought to floor level the life-size figures are easy viewing, even for someone hindered by macular degeneration. The exhibit features high-definition photos of more than 30 of the famous frescos and backlighting the images helps enhance the rich colors.

The self-guided exhibit, housed in the KI Convention Center, features a QR code at each station which provides a brief narrative outlining the details and Biblical history of each painting.

The QR narrative also incorporates some speculations about Michaelangelo’s paintings and the possible hidden messages within the art itself.

Not only does the artwork line the walls, but there are also segments suspended from the ceiling and two stations with seating on the north and south ends of the exhibit hall featuring short films analyzing a single piece of art including “The Last Judgement” and “The Creation of Adam.”

From my mom’s perspective, there was plenty of seating if you just want to rest or stop and enjoy one of the pieces. Bringing headphones is recommended in order to hear the prerecorded narrative on your phone, however there is not a lot of din inside the gallery and the atmosphere is comfortable to enjoy exploring at your own pace.

The Sistine Chapel exhibit is on the move, visiting 20 cities around the world including Denver, Paris, Singapore, Toronto and Sydney, Australia.

The show is wrapping up this week in Green Bay, WI with a final showing January 8, 2023.

Ticket prices are $22 for adults and $19 for children.

The KI Convention Center is at 333 Main St., Green Bay, WI.  Click HERE for hours and more information and be sure to leave a review if you visited the exhibit.

Joan’s review: “I liked the story telling and how the narrator pointed out the small details of each painting from the muscular arms of an older woman to the use of shadows and light. The rich colors of each piece and the ties to the Bible made it an enjoyable outing.”

On a side note – we also found a place for ice cream on our way home, Zesty’s Frozen Custard, so that put a nice cherry on top of the day.
