Obit: Mathias L. “Mush” Serwe, Jr., 82, of Campbellsport

Sept. 17, 2017 – Campbellsport, WI – Mathias L. “Mush” Serwe, Jr, 82, of Campbellsport went home to his heavenly Father with his family by his side on Saturday, September 16, 2017 at his home. He was born on January 8, 1935, the son of Mathias W. and Frances (Volz) Serwe. On October 4, 1958, he married the love of his life Janet R. Sabel at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Fond du Lac.

Matty proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy in Guam as a Seabee. After serving in the military, Matty worked for Jackson Roofing, Miller’s Machine Shop, Twohig’s Flooring and Funeral Home and as a mail carrier for Campbellsport Postal Service. In July 1962, Matty and Janet purchased King Pin Lanes from the Hoffman family and in 1985 he incorporated the business with his two sons and worked there until age 65.

Matty loved working!!! He enjoyed bowling, golfing and pitching horseshoes. He loved his grandchildren dearly and enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sporting events. Matty was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church, Campbellsport Lions Club, the Knights of Columbus, the VFW Post #8339 and was a volunteer fire fighter for the Village of Campbellsport. He was inducted into the Rock River Baseball Hall of Fame in 1983, the West Bend Association Bowling Hall of Fame in 1995 and the Campbellsport High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013.

Matty loved his community and was loved by his community. He was always there for any cause, community event or function.

Survivors include his loving wife of 59 years Janet, son Cary (Lynn) Serwe, daughters Kim (Mark) Mueller, Sharon (Patrick) Brantner, Cindy (Tim) McGray, Sandy (Jim) Benike and son Rick (Jodie) Serwe all of Campbellsport. 14 grandchildren Carissa (Adam) Donath, Brandon (Trish) Serwe, Leah (Jeremy) Bode, Rick (Casey) Mueller, Luke (fiancée Arielle) Mueller, Josh Mueller, Eli (special friend Emily) Mueller, Allyssa (Brett) Birkholz, Kassie Benike, Kallie (Nick) Cusack, Kelsie (Brian) Herriges, Hayley (Josh) Fell, Hayden (Brittney) Serwe and Holden (special friend Michaela) Serwe, and 14 great grandchildren and two on the way Addison and Alannah Donath, Genevieve and Coralie Bode, Miley Mueller, Graham and Griffin Birkholz, Grayson and McKella Cusack, Logan, Linsley and Kylee Herriges and Waylon and Wyatt Fell.

Matty is further survived by his siblings Frank (Pat) Serwe, Cyril (Pat) Serwe and Kathy (Ralph) Herriges, brother-in-law Leroy Sabel, sisters-in-law Donna Serwe, Gloria Serwe and Sally Serwe, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Matty was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws Clarence and Leona Sabel, siblings, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Rosemary and Carl Sether, Virginia and Al Ruf, Sylvester and Susie Serwe, Jeanette and Robert Gruber, Gerald Serwe, Catherine Serwe, Norbert Serwe, Norman Serwe, Joann and Roy Galligan and Rosemary Sabel.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, September 21 at 6:00 PM at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 406 E. Main St. Campbellsport. Rev. Mark Jones will officiate with burial Friday in St Matthews Cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday, September 21 from 1:00 PM until time of Mass at the Church.

In lieu of flowers memorial are appreciated to St. Matthew Church, Aurora Hospice, the Campbellsport Fire Department or the Campbellsport Cougar Club.

The family extends a special thank you to the nurses and staff of Aurora Hospice for their compassionate care and all the wonderful family and friends for their visits, love and support during Matty’s illness.
