Obit: Shirley Stopper, 91, Fond du Lac

Shirley M. Stopper, 91, went to her heavenly home on Wed., Aug. 24, 2016 at the St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac. She was born in Rhinelander on July 10, 1925, the daughter of Lawrence and Audrey (nee Maine) Bruns.  She graduated from Rhinelander Union High School in 1943, during School she was a member of Job’s Daughters.  Shirley went on to the Rhinelander Voc/Tech and received a Secretary/Transcription degree. Shirley’s first job was as a secretary at the Congregational Church, then for the War Board until WWII ended.  Her next job was at the Bump Clinic (now Rhinelander Clinic) as a medical secretary.  She married Walter Grube from Chicago, IL on February 14, 1947.  Shirley was a homemaker while her children were growing up.  She became a Camp Fire Girl’s Leader in 1966 and received a certificate of achievement for being the top leader. Shirley was a parishioner at St. Paul’s Cathedral church where she volunteered for Broken Bread and for church Mice sewing.  Shirley and Walter divorced in 1977.  By then, she was an Action Ad deliverer, store clerk at Stopper’s Market, Singer Sewing Machine clerk at Forest Mall and a discount bread store clerk.  She married Harold A. Stopper on July 10, 1980 and he preceded her in death on March 26, 2008.    Shirley enjoyed nature up in the Northwoods, gardening, flowers, music and her pets Paravel and Spotty.

Shirley is survived by 3 children:  Lee Grube  of Ramsey MN,  Linda and Lori Grube  of Fond du Lac, two grandchildren:  Lee Joseph Grube and Heather (Anthony) Ferdinand, two step sisters-in-law:  Lorna and Carole Stopper, 4 step grandchildren:  Lisa (Dennis) Fenrick, Eric (Beth) Stopper, Jennifer (Kevin) Parsons, and Alison (Matt) Leonhardt, three step great grandchildren:  Ben and Genevieve Stopper and Elizabeth Parsons,  many nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands one infant sister Lois Eleanor, one brother Donald Bruns, daughter-in-law Angel Grube and two step sons Edward and John Stopper.

Funeral services will be on Sunday August 28th, 2016 at 3:00 PM at the St. Paul’s Cathedral, 51 W. Division Street Fond du Lac with the Very Rev. Brian Beno officiating.   Visitation will be at the Church from 2:00 PM until 3:00 PM with burial in October in Forest Home Cemetery, Rhinelander.  Memorials appreciated to the family.  Twohig Funeral Home is serving the family with online guestbook and condolences at www.twohigfunerals.com   Special thanks to Robyn Modjeska, Gladys Lamers, Very Rev.
