Dec. 29, 2016 – Town of West Bend- A heavy aroma of smoke hung in the air Thursday morning as chickadees flitted amidst the debris of a home destroyed by fire.

Neighbor Janice Stauske said the flames were as high as the tree tops.  She and her sister were evacuated at 11:15 p.m.

Stauske, a former principal at St. Frances Cabrini School, credited the Washington County Sheriffs and local firefighters for the help.

Mark and Julius Helmle were rescued by a Sheriffs deputy and West Bend Police Officer Lee Goodman.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
