May 18, 2018 – Washington Co., WI – Ten area law enforcement agencies were recognized Thursday night during the 2018 Washington County Law Enforcement Memorial Service. The event was held at the Washington County Fair Park and hosted this year by the Village of Jackson.

Jackson Police Chief Jed Dolnick was the master of ceremonies. He was joined by Rev. Duane Swenson from Christ Lutheran Church in Jackson who provided the invocation and closing prayer.

Guest speakers included Washington County Sheriff Dale Schmidt, Village of Jackson President Michael Schwab, Washington County Circuit Court Judge James Muehlbauer, and Wisconsin Deprtment of Justice Assistant Attorney General David Perlman.

The Hartford Police Honor Guard presented the colors and Hartford City Band provided music along with Kewaskum High School Choir and Greater Milwaukee Fire and Police Pipes and Drums.

Three fallen officers in Washington County were recognized with a presentation of memorial wreaths: Germantown Police Officer Robert Backes, 35, who was killed March 21, 1981. Washington County Sheriff’s Deputy John Schmitt, 31, who died while answering a call on Labor Day, Sept. 7, 1998 and Marshal Scherger, 33, of the Hartford Police Department who was killed in May 1904.
