West Bend, WI – On this holiday weekend we’re delving into our archives to relive some of the historic moments around West Bend and Washington County.
It was August 2016 when demolition was underway at the former Washington County Senior Center and Annex II. Former West Bend alderwoman and director of the Washington County Senior Center Deb Anderson recalled some of the activities that went on in the building.
The Senior Center has since moved to the Lawrence & Vivian Stockhausen Center on W. Washington Street.
The buildings were being razed as part of the county’s new priority-based budgeting process.
Did you know? The Annex II is part of the county campus and years ago it was “an asylum for the chronic insane.” According to the Story of Washington County by Carl Quickert the “asylum” was built in 1898 near the eastern city limits of West Bend.
“Its wings received two additions in 1911, the material of the entire building being brick and stone. A large farm is being worked in connection with the institution. Read more HERE.
