Slinger H.S. girls and boys victorious at WIARA State Snowboard Championship | By Delaney Braun

February 22, 2023 – Slinger, Wi – The Slinger boys and girls snowboarding teams competed at the WIARA State Snowboard Championships on Saturday, February 18, 2023, at Mt. La Crosse. After an extraordinary regular season both teams were excited to compete.

The boys team consisted of juniors Jack Bullis. Luke Schmitt, and Joe Hefter, sophomore Gavin Braun, seniors Brayden Wiedmeyer and Alex Schneeberger, and freshman Jacob Lischka. The team was selected based on combined times in the regular season.

The girls team consisted of freshman Olivia Strupp and Abrah Adams, sophomore Emma Smith, seniors Delaney Braun and Kallie Weyer, and junior Sydney Kebbekus.

The first event was boardercross and racers were more than prepared. After racing tough courses all season long, they were relieved to race an easier course than usual.

Smith finished first overall and Adams finished close behind in second. The girls’ team had a combined score of 17 giving them a 23-point lead over Waukesha´s 40 points in second place.

The boys team tied for first place with Hartford with a 5th, 6th, 10th, and 11th point finish giving them 32 points.

The next event was giant slalom, a strong suit for the Slinger racers.

Strupp finished in first for the girls followed by Smith in third. The girls had a combined total of 20 points giving them another 27-point lead over Waukesha´s 47 points.

For the boys, Bullis finished in third place along with Schmitt in fourth and Wiedmeyer and Schneeberger in 13th and 16th putting the boys in first place with 36 combined points over West Bend´s 58 and Hartford´s 59.

The last event of the day was slalom. Strupp placed first for the girls and Schmitt placed second for the boys. The girls slalom team finished with 18 points with their top four finishes being first, fourth, fifth, and eight places. The boys finished in second for slalom with Hartford winning by 11 points.

For overall combined races Strupp finished in first and Smith finished in second. Bullis also made the podium for his combined score landing him third place.

The girls team crushed it with a first-place finish with a 69-point lead over second place Waukesha. Slinger Boys escaped the competition with a 12-point win over Hartford.

This is the third consecutive championship win for the Slinger boys’ team and the second consecutive for the girls’ team.
