Traffic counts & signal timing to be conducted on Washington St., Main Street and River Road

The West Bend Common Council approved spending $39,285 with R.A. Smith National, a Brookfield-based company, to conduct street traffic counts and signal timing at 14 intersections in town.

The company will look at traffic turning movement counts for weekday morning and evening peak hours at various intersections including 11 intersections on Washington Street, two on Main Street and one at River Road and Decorah Road.

Data gathered will be used as input into a traffic signal timing computer program to design traffic signal timing plans.

The current signal system will be evaluated and compared to the optimized signal system to show levels of improvement.

The company is also going to evaluate traffic turning movement counts at the non-signalized intersection of University Drive and Washington Street. The consultant will also determine if the traffic signal at Washington Street and the Westwood Mall entrance is still warranted.

City engineer Max Marechal also proposed a revision which would eliminate the company doing traffic counts on Sunday and also have them do counts on Paradise Drive.

For taxpayers and motorists in the city of West Bend – a quick question, which intersection do you think needs the most attention?

  1. The intersection of W. Washington and Westwood Mall should at least be done a vehicle sensitive pattern, along with the lights to the west.
I think a turn lane at University would be very helpful.
