St. Lawrence, WI – A respectful tribute was held Saturday, September 24 for former St. Lawrence Fire Chief Tony Montag Sr. who was recognized for 55 years of service to the St. Lawrence Fire Company, his commitment to his country, his family, and the American Legion Fohl Martin Post.
Received a nice thank-you note in the mail from the family regarding the coverage below.
Volunteer firefighters from across Washington County and fellow veterans united in prayer and offered a final salute to their fallen comrade.
Montag Sr., 82, of St. Lawrence, WI passed away September 19, 2022, at his home peacefully with his family by his side after his short battle with stage IV skin cancer.
During the ceremony veteran and Allenton firefighter praised Montag Sr. for his service in the U.S. Coast Guard and his leadership with the fire company. “Tony was a great nozzle man in 2.5-inch water fights,” said Naab.
Rev. Rick Stoffel presided over the funeral Mass and following a bell-ringing ceremony, at 1:25 p.m. the Washington County Sheriff’s Department issued a final page – a tradition in the law enforcement/firefighter community.
Four loud tones were followed by the dispatcher and a final call. “Anthony Montag Sr. this is your final call. Firefighter Anthony Montag Sr. on behalf of a grateful community we thank you for 55 years of service. Your commitment and dedication is unmatched. The people you have helped is countless. You have always put others first and yourself last. Now God has called you home. May you rest in peace knowing your service will never be forgotten.”
The ceremony concluded with a U.S. military flag presentation and then a final ride in the vintage St. Lawrence fire truck. Rest in peace Tony.
