Letter to the Editor | Time for a change; vote Donaldson and Ehrgott for West Bend School Board | By Megan Schulz

April 1, 2022 – West Bend, WI – What is really going on at the West Bend School District? Does anyone even know? Bullying is running rampant, accountability seems to be on the decline (just as fast as enrollment), and students seem to be getting away with whatever they please. I can only imagine the type of punishment that would’ve been handed down to me if I would’ve acted in the same way these kids are when I was their age.

I saw statistics recently that showed between January 1 and February 18, 2022, there were 124 reported incidents including aggressive/threatening behavior (41), bullying (8), harassment (12), physical contact (61), and property violation (2) within the West Bend School District. As a concerned mother of two children, I can’t help but question what is going on? Is Administration attempting to curb this behavior? What happened to the days of students being held accountable for their actions?
I am truly worried for the safety of my children within the West Bend School District, especially when one of the School Board members thinks bullying is just a minor offense. I wonder if it’s because of this logic that bullying is so prevalent in these schools? We may never know, but it’s worth thinking about.
The current school board has held onto Covid-19 as a distraction as to why they haven’t been able to accomplish their goals for too long now. A vaccine is widely available and students can wear masks if they want. It’s time for them to leave Covid alone, and fix the apparent issues within the district.
With the upcoming election, I personally believe it’s time for a change; time for new and fresh ideas. It’s time for people to stand up for what’s right and not vote yes on everything that’s put in front of them. I will be voting for John Donaldson and Melanie Ehrgott on Tuesday, April 5, 2022. A soft spot lies in my heart for people who served in the military as some of my family did as well. Also being a mom, I know the sacrifices needed to be made to do the right thing for my children and I know Melanie feels the same way.

  1. Erin Dove is the school board member who has stated that she considers bullying a minor problem. Let’s make sure that she and Paul Fischer are NOT re-elected to the school board!
